Reader’s Question:

Can anyone explain how A.M. Best rates an accident insurance company?

Celine

Chicago IL

A.M. Best is just one of the companies that rate the many accident insurance company in the market. In buying your insurance policy, it is important to know more about the company offering it. Reputation and customer service are important but so is financial strength. A company that has good financial strength means it has the ability to pay the claims of its customers.

A.M. Best, like other ratings companies, are independent of the insurers that they rate. You can expect then unbiased reporting of facts. Put it this way. A.M. Best is the professor while the insurance companies are the students. If you want to know what a student’s grade is, you approach the professor right?

For an accident insurance company to be considered at least stable by A.M. Best, it needs to have at least a C or Fair rating. This signifies that the company has the fair capability to meet its financial obligations.

The highest grade that a company can get is A+ or Superior rating. Companies that carry this rating means that it has proven that it has superior ability in meeting the claims of their customers. An A or Excellent rating means that while the company is not as strong as those who have A+ ratings, they are more than capable of meeting the needs of their policy holders.

After A comes B+ or Very Good. See the pattern here? It really looks like a college grade doesn’t it? After B+ comes B or Good. Companies that carry these ratings can still meet the obligations but nos as strong as A-rated companies.

What about D or lower? I’ll be surprised if they still manage to operate. Insurance companies that have these ratings mean that they are in deep in trouble and have the possibility of closing down.

That’s it for A.M. Best ratings. If you’re not satisfied with it, you can visit other companies that also rate accident insurance company. In most cases though, they generally tend to have the same observations since they are using the same data.

What is the easiest way to check car insurance company ratings?

Ben

New York NY

The easiest way of getting car insurance review is through the internet. There are websites of independent agencies that rate insurance companies. Following are some websites you can check:

1. You can go to rating agencies websites like: A.M. Best Company, Standard & Poor’s, Fitch, and others. These rating agencies commonly grade an insurance company based on their financial strength.

2. Your state department’s insurance website can also be a good source for car insurance review. They would usually post consumers complaints against insurance providers on their website.

3. The Better Business Bureau website can also be a good source of information for insurance companies. They provide consumers and business reviews, ratings, reports, and complaints.

With these easy steps, there is no excuse why you cannot make a proper review of insurance company before engaging business with them.

Ive been with the same insurance company for 15 years. Although I have been searching around and I have a lot of rates cheaper than what I am paying now. I am not sure if I should switch to a different insurance provider. Do I get any benefits of being a long time customer?

Sam

Chicago IL

This decision of switching to a different car insurance company is a personal decision. Most insurance companies would provide you discounts if you stay with them or if you get all your insurances with them such as car insurance, home insurance or renters. Most insurance providers will also provide you discounts if you do not have claims or with less or no tickets.

Some insurance providers give discounts as well for being with the company for a certain number of years but not all do so depending upon that discount alone may not be a good reason to continue with your current insurer, especially if you can get just as good coverage for a cheaper price with another insurer.

When you switch to a different car insurance company, new insurers also provide a discount if you have had continuous insurance coverage with them with no lapses. All you need to do is to prove that you have continuous car insurance on your car to be eligible for this discount.

Insurance providers would prefer to keep you as a customer but that does not mean there are enough reasons necessarily to keep the same company if you can get better car insurance deal with the same amount of coverage.

I’m one of those people who are really feeling the pinch of this economy, and I need to make my budget work until I get a new job. What can I do to lower my auto insurance bills?

Peter Smith

Greensboro, NC

You’re right! We need to find more ways to stretch our hard earned dollars, which means discretionary purchasing has got to go. We would also need to re-evaluate our bills and find out how to save more dollars here-and-there, but what about our auto insurance coverage? You may be paying more on your insurance than you really need to. One of the best ways to find that out is to run an insurance quote check and find out what’s being offered today. There are even times that the best solution to expensive auto insurance rates is by switching to another carrier.

One way to increase your chances of getting a more affordable auto insurance policy is by understanding auto insurance company ratings. Independent rating agencies such as Moody’s, J.D Powers, or Standard & Poor, to name a few, are valuable for consumers to make better informed buying decisions. Comparing rates can easily be done on the web, but you don’t want to sacrifice quality so also take into consideration valuable information coming from auto insurance company ratings, and get the best value for your hard-earned money.

In the end, you don’t want to end up paying good money on a carrier that will just pack-up soon or to someone who may not put your best interest first during an insurance claim. Auto insurance company ratings are a great way to help you with this. As for low rates, well you can easily run free insurance quote search on the Web and within seconds, get a listing of all the current rates offered and be able to pick the company that best suits your budget. We encourage you to shop for your next auto insurance policy on the web.

The right kind of auto insurance will save you hundreds of dollars every year, without sacrificing on the necessary coverage that you, or anyone, should not go without.

I’ve been asking around, and everyone is recommending that I make a list of insurance quotes and make some auto insurance company ratings. Why the heck do I even need to do this? Don’t all auto insurance companies do the same thing: insure your car?

Kenny

Miami, FL

Though all auto insurance companies insure your car, the cost and quality of service that they provide differs from each company. Making a bunch of auto insurance company reviews may seem like a hassle, but it’s definitely worth the time and effort if you plan to seriously insure your car.

The first advantage you’d get by properly getting an auto insurance company review is that you’ll be able to scope out the prices of the insurance policies that you want to get. Whether you want a bare-essentials type of insurance policy or an umbrella policy that covers everything that could happen to your car, you’d empower yourself to make the right choice.

Another advantage you get by making a decent review is to be able to track the history of a company. You’d get to assess their performance since they were established, and you’d see how much they’ve grown in the recent years. It’ll also help you to avoid insurance companies that are in the red. These companies are in danger of bankruptcy, especially in today’s turbulent times. It would definitely not be to your advantage if your insurance company folds up and can’t give money out just when you need the money the most.

Making an auto insurance company ratings definitely isn’t easy. But it’ll help you make the smart choice when you choose your insurance plan.

Reader’s Question:

Are my credit scores used to evaluate my premiums here in Texas during an auto insurance company rating process?

Casper

Arlington, TX

Your credit score may definitely be used by auto insurance companies as a reference and should not be the sole reason or factor to be used in determining your car insurance premiums there in Texas. However. Your credit or payment history and behavior is definitely an indication of how responsible you are in taking care of your bills, which can give an auto insurance company a good idea or predictor of your future auto insurance risks and probability of filing claims.

However, your age, where you live, the kind of vehicle to be insured and your driving record would have a more significant impact on your auto insurance premiums. Credit score is merely a way for the car insurance company to categorize the kind of customer you are, especially when it comes to billing but your overall auto insurance risks are based on the factors stated above. Driving history itself already has the biggest impact on your rates among all factors, followed by your age grouping and so forth.

So yes, auto insurance company ratings do use credit but not in the same way as other companies would. Also, when an auto insurance company does use your credit score it should have no impact on your credit score at all. It would also be advisable to shop around, the Internet is a great way to be able to compare auto insurance rates from different carriers conveniently.

Reader’s Question:

Is it true that a car insurance company here in New Mexico can give preferred auto insurance ratings or premiums to certain professions?

Andrea

Rio Rancho, NM

Yes, it is possible for certain individuals or professions to have better rates than others. Except for those under military, national guard or coast guard service, certain jobs that posses low-risk in getting involved in accidents can be given discounted auto insurance ratings on their premiums. Such jobs include work-at-home employees or professionals like engineers, doctors or teachers and others who have “Desk Jobs”. Aside from the low accident risk these kind of drivers posses, an auto insurance may also see the possession of college degrees and an indicator of a more responsible driver.

You may also be interested to know about other ways to increase your chances of getting favorable auto insurance ratings and premiums for your vehicle there in New Mexico:

1. Other forms of auto insurance discounts are available, including those for completing defensive driving classes, good student discounts for students who are bringing home good grades, installing additional safety measures and mechanisms on your car and taking advantage of low mileage discounts.

2. Don’t forget to ask about good driver discounts if you have been driving for three to five years without having incurred any traffic violations or gotten involved in car accidents.

3. Some providers have annual payment features that allows for cheap auto insurance premiums in the long run. You could also go with higher deductibles on your policy to lower down your regular premiums.

Reader’s Question:

I have several ticket under my driving record here in Rhode Island, would that jeopardize my auto insurance ratings or affect premiums? If so, what can I do about it?

Gordon

Providence, RI

Unless your driving history is really terrible, tickets and moving violations would not necessarily jeopardize your ability to get car insurance but it will have a significant on your ability to get cheaper rates. Your driving history is one of the first things that is referred to by auto insurance rating systems and this record will usually go as far back as three to five years. Even minor traffic violations, in quantity, would cause you to pay higher premiums there in Rhode Island.

There is no reason however, that you should be stuck paying high auto insurance rates. It will be a bit of a challenge at the beginning but we have to start somewhere, right? Here are a few suggestions to help you out:

Start by enrolling on Accident prevention or Defensive Driving courses that will help you avoid getting into further trouble or accidents in the future. Accredited courses will also make you eligible to receive additional discounts on your premiums.

Follow the rules when driving. Now is not the time to have another point against your license since this will lead to much higher increases.

Try as much as possible not to file auto insurance claims unless absolutely necessary, more frequent claims will lead to an increase in your rates since the company may see you as being exposed to more accidents.

Increase your deductibles to get a lower regular premiums.

Reader’s Question:

I will be buying a new car this coming month and now I need to get auto insurance for it, is it true that the kind of vehicle I buy would influence my future rates here in Michigan?

Arthur

Battle Creek, MI

Yes, the kind of car that you buy and insure, although not the deciding factor, would definitely have a significant influence on how your rates there in Michigan would be determined. Auto Insurance company ratings for each vehicle type, model, manufacture and year vary due to the fact that every model and car type have their own pro’s & con’s when it comes to car accidents.

For example, smaller vehicles like SUVs are statistically shown to get involved in more auto accidents than their larger counterparts. One reason for this would be due to the kind of demographic that prefers smaller vehicles, namely teenagers and young adults which is also seen by auto insurance companies as high-risk drivers. It could also be said that drivers tend to be more careful driving a larger car. Smaller cars also have the highest probability of getting totaled in a collision, driving the cost of insurance for replacement in the future even higher.

Aside from this, you also have to take into account the popularity of the kind of car you are buying among car-thieves and dangerously-envious people who might vandalize a top of the line, and very expensive, vehicle if their owners tend to flaunt it around.

It would also be good to note that your driving history, prior auto insurance coverage, where you live, your age and to a certain extent, your credit history would also be major factors to consider aside from the auto insurance company ratings of your car.

I’ve gotten a traffic ticket here in Illinois, and this is on top of a prior one I had several months ago, would this be enough to cause my auto insurance premiums to rise?

Yes, most of the time even just a single violation would already be enough to cause your auto insurance premiums to rise. It would still depend on how lenient your provider is. What you have to understand is that insurance companies are all about risks, in fact they built their industry on the business of risk. Traffic violations, getting arrested for Driving Under the Influence (DUI or DWI), unpaid speeding tickets and all other forms of moving violations only contributes to show your auto insurance provider that you have a higher risk of getting involved in car accidents. That means a higher likelihood that you would be filing for claims or for the company to pay huge amounts of money in the form of settlements to anyone you may happen to injure.

The higher your risk to insure, the more you are charged on auto insurance premiums to compensate for the said risk. Most auto insurance companies have rating systems that would determine how much increase you will have, depending on the gravity and the frequency of your offenses. You also have to remember that these records would stay under your name for the next three or five years so it would be wise not to get involved into further violations that would just make matters worst on your auto insurance coverage. You could compensate by taking defensive driving courses and by increasing your discount to help you save money on your premiums.
